# Backups and restore

> An encrypted copy of your company you hold yourself, and how to bring it back.

Settings → Backups.

Produces an encrypted archive of the company — accounts, documents, journals, customers, vendors, employees, items and the rest — that you keep yourself.

**The passphrase is yours and there is no recovery.** At least eight characters, and if it is lost the backup is unreadable by anybody including us. That is what "encrypted" has to mean for it to be worth anything.

**Restoring previews first.** A restore shows what it would change before it changes it, and restoring into an existing company asks you to type the company name to confirm — because the alternative is somebody discovering afterwards that they overwrote live books.

Backups carry a manifest and a SHA-256, so what comes back can be proven to be what went in.
