# Budget vs actual reporting

> Budget, actual, variance in amount and percent — by account, class, project or department.

Section: Reports · Canonical: https://intubu.intuitivecapital-dai.com/docs/budget-vs-actual

Accounting → Budgets, then the Budget vs Actual report.

Columns are Budget, Actual, Variance ($) and Variance (%), for the period and year to date. Favourable and unfavourable are shown by *meaning*, not by sign — under-spending an expense line is favourable and is coloured as such, which sounds obvious until you have read a report that does the opposite.

**Dimensions:** budget at whatever level you manage — the whole company, a class, a location, a project or a department — and report against the same.

**Scenarios:** compare actuals against base, best or worst case. See [Budget scenarios](https://intubu.intuitivecapital-dai.com/docs/budget-scenarios).

**Variance threshold:** set a percentage above which a variance is worth a look, and the report highlights only those. A page of 2% variances hides the one line that moved 60%.
