# Applying payments to invoices

> Suggestions that say which rule matched and how confident they are.

When a payment arrives, IntuBu proposes which invoices it settles, in this order:

1. **Exact invoice** — the amount matches one open invoice exactly. Highest confidence.
2. **Exact combination** — it matches a set of up to five invoices exactly. Still very high confidence.
3. **Oldest first** — no exact match, so it proposes applying to the oldest invoices. **Lower confidence, and it says so.**

Every suggestion states which rule produced it and what that means. The third case explicitly asks you to review before applying, because "oldest first" is a convention, not a fact about this payment.

Nothing is applied automatically without you accepting it.
