Converting a lead
One step turns a lead into an account, a contact and an opportunity — and optionally a customer.
Converting a lead creates, in one transaction:
- an account for the company,
- a contact for the person, marked primary,
- an opportunity, carrying the lead's estimated value and expected close.
A customer record is only created if you ask for it. Not every prospect should appear in the accounting sub-ledger the moment a rep converts them; the account can be linked to a customer later. See Linking a CRM account to an accounting customer.
The lead is kept, marked converted, with a pointer to what it became. That is what lets campaign attribution trace revenue back to where it came from — deleting the lead would break the chain.
A lead cannot be converted twice.
