Channels are for a topic or a team, and can be open to everyone or private to their members. Direct messages are between people. Both live beside the books rather than in a separate product, so a question about an invoice can carry a link to it.

Mentions notify the person named. Unread counts are per channel, so a busy channel does not bury a direct question.

Guests can be given access to a single channel without an account — useful for a customer or an outside adviser working on one thing. A guest sees that channel and nothing else: not other channels, not the member list of the company, and nothing of the books.

Messages can be edited and deleted, and an edited message says so rather than quietly changing.
